Floating Shafting

With floating shafting for gear couplings, an unsupported floating shaft is used to span the gap between the driving and driven shafts. This is when the shafts are widely separated. The two couplings required at each end of that shaft consist of one half of a standard coupling bolted to a rigid hub. Each unit is called a Flex-Rigid Coupling.

Difference between shaft and axle

The main difference is that the shaft is used to transfer the power from one mechanical member to the other while the axle is used for just support the load. The shaft is a live member while the axle is a dead one. Axle subjected to only bending moments whereas the shaft subjected to bending moment and twisting moment and sometimes the axial loads.

What are fixed and floating bearings in the context of linear motion?

When bearings are used on both ends of the screw shaft, a common arrangement is for one end of the shaft to be fixed and the other end floating. The fixed end bearing is typically an angular contact thrust bearing, and the floating end bearing is typically a single-row radial bearing. Ball and lead screws often used a fixed-floating end bearing ...

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Fixed Bearings and Float Bearings Radial and axial loads in bearing units can be transmitted by fixed and floating bearings. A fixed bearing is generally used for medium and large -sized shafts that can reach high temperatures during operation. It has to support radially the shaft assembly and to locate it axially in both directions.
